Kick it with elasticity: Safety and performance in human-robot soccer

چکیده
The RoboCup community has one definite goal [H. Kitano, M. Asada, RoboCup humanoid challenge: That’s one small step for a robot, one giant leap for mankind, in: IEEE/RSJ Int. Conf. on Intelligent Robots and Systems, IROS1998, Victoria, pp. 419–424, 1998]: winning against the human world soccer champion team by the year 2050. This implies real tackles and fouls between humans and robots, rising safety concerns for the robots and evenmore important for the human players. Nowadays, similar questions are discussed in the field of physical human–robot interaction (pHRI), but mainly in the context of industrial and service robotics applications. The first part of our paper is an attempt for a pHRI view on human–robot soccer. We take scenes from real soccer matches and discuss what could have happened if one of the teams consisted of robots instead of humans. Themost important result is that elastic joints are needed to reduce the impact during collisions. The second and third part consider conversely, how the robot can handle the impact of kicking the ball and how it can reach the velocity of human-level soccer. Again joint elasticity is the key point. Overall, the paper analyzes a vision far ahead. However, all our conclusions are based on concrete simulations, experiments, derivations, or findings from sports science, forensics, and pHRI. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Study of Evolutionary and Swarm Intelligent Techniques for Soccer Robot Path Planning
Finding an optimal path for a robot in a soccer field involves different parameters such as the positions of the robot, positions of the obstacles, etc. Due to simplicity and smoothness of Ferguson Spline, it has been employed for path planning between arbitrary points on the field in many research teams. In order to optimize the parameters of Ferguson Spline some evolutionary or intelligent al...
متن کاملAn Unsupervised Learning Method for an Attacker Agent in Robot Soccer Competitions Based on the Kohonen Neural Network
RoboCup competition as a great test-bed, has turned to a worldwide popular domains in recent years. The main object of such competitions is to deal with complex behavior of systems whichconsist of multiple autonomous agents. The rich experience of human soccer player can be used as a valuable reference for a robot soccer player. However, because of the differences between real and simulated soc...
متن کاملLearning a Table Soccer Robot a New Action Sequence by Observing and Imitating
Star-Kick is a commercially available and fully automatic table soccer (foosball) robot, which plays table soccer games against human players on a competitive level. One of our research goals is to learn this table soccer robot skillful actions similar to a human player based on a moderate number of trials. Two independent learning algorithms are employed for learning a new lock and slide-kick ...
متن کاملSoccer Goalkeeper Task Modeling and Analysis by Petri Nets
In a robotic soccer team, goalkeeper is an important challenging role, which has different characteristics from the other teammates. This paper proposes a new learning-based behavior model for a soccer goalkeeper robot by using Petri nets. The model focuses on modeling and analyzing, both qualitatively and quantitatively, for the goalkeeper role so that we have a model-based knowledge of the ta...
متن کاملCompare sequence of joint motion and muscle electromyography between low drive and high drive soccer instep kick
The purpose of this study was to examine the difference between two types of the soccer instep kick in temporal sequence of motion and muscle electromyography, during forward swing phase of the kick. Ten elite soccer players, volunteered as subjects in the study. To culculate the kinematics data, we used DLT method with two video camera that filmed five markers fixed on anatomical points o...
